History of the Salsa
Salsa dancing has a rich and varied history, and is one of the most popular dances existing today. With its roots in Puerto Rican music of the 1960s, Salsa is considered the national dance and music of Puerto Rico. Fusing Afro-Cuban beats with vibrant jazz textures, Salsa is a bit like a combination of Mambo and Cha-Cha: high-energy, fast-paced, and extremely enjoyable to dance. Salsa employs quick foot switches and multiple spins and turns, so it’s not only a pleasure to dance, but a joy to watch, as well. Some well-known Salsa dancers include Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente.
Benefits of Salsa Dancing
With its high-energy beats and fast tempo, Salsa is a great way to get your blood moving and your heart pumping! Salsa offers an incredible aerobic benefit to your normal workout routine, as it keeps your body moving and can add a needed change to your routine through new movements and patterns. Salsa dancing can improve your blood pressure, lower your chance of heart disease, strengthen your muscles, increase your flexibility, and even help you lose weight. And, since you dance with a partner, Salsa dancing can help you focus on certain core muscle groups such as your upper body and arms that you wouldn’t use in solo dancing. Dancing with a partner also helps increase your balance and stability, since you’ll be watching out for your partner as well as yourself!
Whether you’re interested in starting a solo hobby, or you want a new couple’s activity, Salsa dancing is a great way to get active and explore a vibrant tradition of dance and music. Contact us to learn more about our Salsa lessons, and schedule your appointment online.
